Transforming Light with Depth, Transparency, and Contrast

Markus Fuerderer, a renowned designer, has created a groundbreaking luminaire design called CUBE | OLED. This innovative design combines depth, transparency, and contrast to transform the way we experience light. The CUBE | OLED is a light source comprised of multiple transparent OLED panels laminated between optical crystal glass cubes, creating a unique and captivating lighting experience.

The CUBE | OLED stands out from other luminaires due to its use of transparent OLED technology. It features 12 transparent organic light emitting diode (OLED) panels arranged in an orthogonal coordinate system and laminated between 8 optical crystal glass cubes. Transparent circuit paths applied on the inner glass surfaces supply electricity to the assembled OLED panels inside the monolith. When activated, the integral array transforms this transparent cube into an omni-directional light source.

One of the challenges in creating this design was minimizing the visible parts of circuit paths and OLED bezels to maintain the purist and minimalist aesthetic. Through extensive research and benchmarking, Fuerderer was able to create a spatial element that emits light without revealing the mystery of how it does so.

When the CUBE | OLED is activated, it provides glare-free, omni-directional ambient light from the internally arranged transparent OLED panels within a single compact volume. When deactivated, the monolith appears as a transparent and translucent volume, adding an intellectual dimension to the design. The device can be used as a stand-alone item or mounted as a pendant or on a stem to position the light source as needed.

The CUBE | OLED design project started in April 2013 and was registered with a patent pending status in June 2013. A physical prototype is currently being developed, showcasing the innovative potential of transparent OLED technology in the field of illumination.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2014.
